Monstrous Geographies

Monstrous Geographies 5th Global Meeting Call for Presentations 2016 Wednesday 11th May - Friday 13th May 2016 Prague, Czech Republic What do ancient burial sites, haunted houses, post-apocalyptic landscapes, and even recent topographical manifestations of the Gaza conflict or the crash site of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 all have in common? Even if they no longer bear the physical markers of violence, the geographic locations of devastation and human suffering are often imbued with memories of horror that are passed on from generation to generation through various textual, audio and visual media. What is the relationship between evil and the monstrous? Is the monstrous always rooted in the element of evil? Can disasters caused by nature be regarded as evil? Can we talk about geographies of poverty, hunger and homelessness in relation to monstrosity? Can evil and/or monstrosity be immanent to place or are they performed by cultural discourse, rituals and practices

Queer(ing) Critical Issues 1st Global Meeting

Queer(ing) Critical Issues 1st Global Meeting Call for Participation 2016 Monday 2nd May - Wednesday 4th May 2016 Prague, Czech Republic As a framework for thinking about and understanding the issues that inform daily life, queer theory offers a useful basis for questioning 'conventional wisdom' and essentialist notions about the definition of and relationship between biological sex, gender and sexual orientation. Contributions to the body of knowledge known as queer theory challenge the values and notions of 'normality' that underpin arguments about the critical issues facing us today. These critical perspectives invite us to ask why the current beliefs and practices around gender identity and sexuality exist, whose interests are served through those arrangements, and what alternatives might look like. By its very nature, queer theory has been closely aligned with concerns of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ) communitie

REMOTE: Rethinking Remoteness and Peripherality

REMOTE: Rethinking Remoteness and Peripherality 16-19 January 2017, Longyearbyen, Norway http://www.islanddynamics.org/remote.html This international conference explores the concepts of remoteness and peripherality. These concepts are used in numerous disciplines, including geography, development studies, anthropology, spatial planning, and cultural studies. But what do remoteness and peripherality mean in practice, from the perspectives of the people and places deemed to be remote and peripheral? 'Remote' and 'peripheral' presume a centring of (potentially colonial) power elsewhere and tend to be defined in terms of accessibility to major urban areas. Are remoteness and peripherality essentially relative concepts, only comprehensible with reference to the near and the central? Can remoteness

Conference on ‘Folk Belief’ and ‘The Supernatural in Literature and Film’

Conference on 'Folk Belief' and 'The Supernatural in Literature and Film' 21st to 24th January 2017 Longyearbyen, Norway http://www.islanddynamics.org/supernaturalconference.html This interdisciplinary conference explores the supernatural in literature and film as well as folk belief from around the globe. Folk belief and vernacular religion exist in all societies. Previous Island Dynamics conferences in rural Shetland (2014) and hyperurban Macau (2015) have placed traditions of the supernatural in local contexts with long, complex histories. But what happens to folk belief in places with new communities and transient residents? Can legends and rituals thrive after their originators have departed back home? Longyearbyen (population 2200) is the world's northernmost town, the main set
