Conference Theme "Honoring Traditions and Creating the Future"

Welcome to Nagoya, the "Midland" of Japan! We are pleased to host the 23rd Congress of the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology.

The theme of the congress, "Honoring Traditions and Creating the Future" reflects the character of Nagoya, a modern metropolis where cultural tradition and advanced technology co-exist. This area is known for manufacturing industries such as the state-of-the-art automobiles produced in the adjacent city of Toyota, while its historical monuments bring you back to the medieval days when this region sprouted legendary samurai warriors, including the first Tokugawa Shogun, that united and ruled the nation. The harmony between the old and new should also have a profound meaning for cross-cultural psychology studies of today, faced with tensions between traditional values and societal structure on one hand and rapid changes and growing diversity that can be found globally on the other hand. Our scientific committee is planning a number of academic events that can help researchers with diverse backgrounds from different parts of the world work together to tackle these current issues.

The conference venue is located right in front of Nagoya Station, which is conveniently connected to our international airport by a 30-minute train ride. Enjoy travels on the Shinkansen, the super-express (and super-punctual) bullet trains, which run as frequently as every five minutes at peak hours, bringing you to popular destinations such as Kyoto and Osaka in less than an hour, and Yokohama and Tokyo in about 100 minutes. Or, you might hop on local trains to visit other lesser-known places and discover unexpected parts of our country and people.

The organizing and scientific committees are fully committed to making this Congress an enjoyable and academically rewarding meeting for you. I look forward to seeing you in Nagoya!

Professor, Nagoya University
